ABSTRACT
The repair of concrete structures in aggressive environments can become a recurring cycle because existing or new steel reinforcement used in conventional repairs remains susceptible to corrosion. This presentation explores the use of non-corrosive glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars as an alternative internal reinforcement for concrete repair applications, especially in structures exposed to chlorides, moisture, and other corrosive conditions.

The presentation highlights the potential of GFRP bars to improve durability and extend service life while also providing construction advantages such as low weight and easier handling. It also addresses key design and construction considerations, including serviceability, detailing requirements, the applicability of ACI CODE-440.11-22 to GFRP-reinforced concrete, and the limitations associated with GFRP bars use in repair applications.

Gustavo Tumialan, Ph.D, PEAssociate Principal | Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, IncGustavo Tumialan, Ph.D, PE is an Associate Principal at Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, Inc. in Boston, Massachusetts. He specializes in the investigation, evaluation, repair, and rehabilitation of existing structures. His expertise includes structural condition assessment, diagnosis and remediation of distressed and deteriorated structures, design of repairs and strengthening systems, and in-situ load testing of concrete structures. He is a Fellow of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and a member of ICRI and ASCE. He also serves on ACI Committees 562 - Evaluation, Repair and Rehabilitation of Concrete Structures; ACI 440 - FRP Strengthening; ACI 549 – FRCM Strengthening, and ACI 437, Strength Evaluation of Existing Concrete Structures.
Kevin MisaroProject Consultant | Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc.Kevin Misaro is a Project Consultant at Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc., based in Boston, Massachusetts. His expertise primarily consists of the investigation and evaluation of deterioration in existing structures, and the design of applicable repairs and/or strengthening systems.
