Presenters Gustavo Tumialan, Ph.D, PE, Associate Principal with Simpson, Gumpertz & Heger, and Kevin Misaro, Project Consultant with Simpson Gumpertz & Heger discussed the use of non-corrosive glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars as an alternative internal reinforcement for concrete repair applications, especially in structures exposed to chlorides, moisture, and other corrosive conditions. Their presentation highlighted the potential of GFRP bars to improve durability and extend service life while also providing construction advantages such as low weight and easier handling. It also addressed key design and construction considerations, including serviceability, detailing requirements, the applicability of ACI CODE-440.11-22 to GFRP-reinforced concrete, and the limitations associated with GFRP bars use in repair applications.
The presenters’ informative presentation and interactive discussion enabled participants to:
Describe the need for durable concrete repairs in aggressive environments
Explain the properties and benefits of GFRP bars for concrete repair applications
Identify key design, detailing, serviceability, and construction considerations when using GFRP bars in concrete repairs
Discuss the limitations of GFRP bars and how they influence their suitability for repair and rehabilitation projects
Review case studies that illustrate the practical use of GFRP bars in concrete repair applications
